The Question
Could we return to Florida for half the price, without sacrificing the experience?
Investigation Summary
As a family, we fell in love with Florida during our first trip to Walt Disney World in Easter 2025. Like many first-time visitors, we booked everything through Virgin Atlantic Holidays. It was an incredible experience — the holiday of a lifetime — but it came at a cost.
We spent over £9,000, before buying so much as a hot dog.
The trip left us wanting more. Much more. The problem was that another £9,000 holiday simply wasn't realistic. We couldn't justify spending that sort of money again so soon.
Instead, we found ourselves doing what so many people do after returning from Florida. Reading the travel blogs. Watching YouTube videos. Reliving the memories.
Eventually, we decided enough was enough. Instead of asking if we could afford to go back, we started asking how.
That question became our first investigation. Over the following months, we researched reward flights, tracked ticket prices, compared accommodation options and looked at every opportunity to reduce the cost without compromising the holiday itself.
This is Case File 001 — the founding investigation of The Travel Detectives — into whether a family of four can enjoy a 14-night Universal Orlando holiday during the Easter holidays for under £4,500.

Flights
We actually made this decision several years before this holiday was even a possibility. Back in 2021, we decided that we wanted to take our twin daughters to Walt Disney World to celebrate their 13th birthdays in 2026. Spoiler alert — that didn't happen. But that decision changed how we thought about travel.
We signed up for the Virgin Atlantic Rewards Credit Card with one simple goal: to collect enough Virgin Points over time to reduce the cost of what we knew would be an expensive holiday. Having previously flown with Virgin Atlantic, we were already members of the Flying Club and had a small balance of points waiting to be used.
There's no secret formula here. We simply made the Virgin Atlantic credit card our everyday spending card wherever possible. Major purchases went on the card, we linked our Tesco Clubcard to maximise the points we earned and eventually upgraded to the paid credit card to increase the number of Virgin Points we collected.
The biggest boost came from booking our first Florida holiday. When we booked our 2025 Walt Disney World package through Virgin Atlantic Holidays, we deliberately didn't spend any of our existing points. Instead, we kept saving. That £9,000 holiday generated a significant number of additional Virgin Points and took us close to the spending threshold needed to earn a Virgin Atlantic Companion Voucher.
Looking back, resisting the temptation to use our points on the first trip was probably one of the smartest financial decisions we made. It gave us the flexibility to plan a second Florida holiday far sooner than we ever thought possible.
Qualifying for a Virgin Atlantic Companion Voucher completely changed the economics of this trip. The voucher covered one of our four return flights, while the remaining three were booked entirely using the Virgin Points we had spent several years collecting. The only cash payment required was the taxes and charges associated with each ticket.
Virgin Points used: 298,000. Adult taxes: 2 × £297.22. Children's taxes: 2 × £207.22. Total cash paid: £1,008.88 — that worked out to £126.11 per person, each way.
When writing this investigation, we checked the cost of booking the same direct Virgin Atlantic flights for the equivalent travel period the following year. At the time of writing, the cash price for four passengers in Economy Classic was £6,660. By using 298,000 Virgin Points, a Companion Voucher, and paying only £1,008.88 in taxes and charges, we dramatically reduced the cash cost of getting to Florida.
Detective's Note
If you're hoping to visit Florida in two or three years' time, don't wait until you're ready to book before thinking about points. The earlier you start collecting, the more options you'll have when reward seats become available.

Detective's Verdict
Collecting Virgin Points isn't a quick win. It took us several years of consistent spending to accumulate the points that we had. However, for us, the savings made it one of the single biggest reasons this investigation succeeded. If you're planning a Florida holiday in the future rather than next month, starting to collect points early could make a substantial difference to your overall budget.

Accommodation
Choosing the right accommodation had the potential to make or break our £4,500 target. After staying at Bahama Bay Resort and Spa on our previous Walt Disney World holiday, we already knew it offered something we considered far more valuable than a hotel room: space.
We are a busy family of four. After spending ten or twelve hours in a theme park, having separate bedrooms, somewhere to cook and somewhere simply to relax became a luxury we weren't prepared to give up.
The resort has everything that we needed and more — including 24-hour security, gated access, numerous pools, well-maintained grounds and a great restaurant and bar with live music events weekly.
The Bahama Sun condo included three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a full-size fully equipped kitchen, utility room with full-size washer and dryer, spacious living area, air conditioning and access to all of the resort's facilities.

We found the condo through a Facebook Group called Bahama Bay Resort Friends and Guests, connected with the owner directly, who put us in touch with her local agent who managed the property. We booked through Prime Orlando Villas.
Detective's Note
Some resorts in Florida can charge up to $40 (plus tax) per night in fees. We looked at amazing resorts such as The Grove but quickly realised the real value was in choosing resorts with no hidden costs.
Booking directly with an owner was something we'd never done before. My former career as a criminal investigator meant my alarm bells started ringing. We were being asked to enter our card details into an unfamiliar payment system and provide copies of our passports. At first, it didn't feel right. So we investigated. We spoke directly with the owner, contacted Bahama Bay Resort to confirm the property was genuine, and checked with Virgin Money that our credit card purchase would be protected. Only once we'd satisfied ourselves that everything was legitimate did we go ahead. That extra hour or two of research saved us a significant amount of money.
Staying off-site also gave us the flexibility to enjoy Florida beyond the theme parks. Pool days, supermarkets, local restaurants and exploring the surrounding area became part of the holiday, rather than feeling like every day had to be spent inside a park.
One of the biggest trade-offs with staying off-site is the extra travelling. Bahama Bay is around 45–50 minutes from Universal Orlando, meaning you won't be able to pop back to your room during the day. For us, this wasn't an issue. We planned our days carefully, packed everything we needed and often combined the journey with a supermarket stop or dinner before heading into the parks. In return, we enjoyed far more space and saved a considerable amount of money.
Detective's Verdict
For our family, staying off-site was one of the biggest reasons this investigation succeeded. We gained significantly more space, avoided expensive resort fees and had the freedom to explore more of Florida than just the theme parks. The trade-off was a daily drive of around 45–50 minutes to Universal Orlando. For us, that was a compromise well worth making. If your priority is getting the best possible value from your holiday budget, we'd strongly recommend considering off-site accommodation.

Park Tickets
One of the biggest expenses of any Universal Orlando holiday is the park tickets, so securing them at the lowest possible price was critical if we were going to stay within our £4,500 budget.
Our research suggested that Black Friday consistently offered some of the best prices of the year through reputable UK ticket retailers. Attraction Tickets comes with a 4.8 out of 5 stars on Trustpilot with over 5,000 reviews. It came up time and time again on social media forums as a reputable place to purchase tickets, with the consistent theme in reviews being their excellent customer service.
While researching, we also discovered an exclusive pre-sale mailing list that offered an additional discount code on top of the advertised Black Friday price. That one email subscription ended up saving us a further £439.32.

Detective's Note
Many UK visitors assume buying directly from the US will be cheaper, but UK-specific 14-day tickets are often better value and easier to find. Signing up to retailer mailing lists before major sales events can be worthwhile — in our case, it unlocked an exclusive discount code that wasn't available to everyone.
The biggest lesson from this exhibit wasn't simply waiting for Black Friday. It was doing your research before Black Friday arrived. This proved to be one of the easiest savings we made during the entire investigation. Booking through an established UK ticket retailer also gave us confidence that our tickets were genuine and provided consumer protection if anything went wrong.

Car Hire
Staying off-site meant a hire car wasn't a luxury — it was essential. It gave us complete flexibility to visit supermarkets, explore beyond the parks and travel on our own schedule, all while still working out cheaper than many of the alternatives.
There are so many options when it comes to booking a hire car from Orlando MCO airport. We used all of the comparison sites and saved the quotes. I called Virgin Atlantic Holidays to see if I could use some existing points to pay for car hire — we couldn't. They gave me a quote through Hertz for a mid-size SUV (Ford Edge or similar) for the entire 14-day period. The price was cheaper than any of the quotes we'd had so far, and having used Hertz through Virgin on our previous trip we knew they were trustworthy.
Now, I would have loved nothing more than hiring a huge American truck for two weeks. It's the American Dream. However, these extra-large trucks are often double the cost of a mid-size SUV. For the sake of the investigation — and my bank balance — we went with the mid-size SUV. It was more than big enough to fit four full-size cases in.
Collection was simple. After following signs to the car hire area, a quick trip to the desk to have my paperwork checked and we were being given directions to the parking lot. Most cars in the USA have an alarm button to help you locate your vehicle in a huge car park. Use it. Thank me later.

Take a video of the car prior to leaving the car park. This will capture any existing damage and will make sure you can push back if any hire company says you caused damage to the vehicle.
Detective's Verdict
Hiring a car gave us the flexibility that made staying off-site possible. Although it added to the upfront cost of the holiday, the freedom it provided easily justified the expense. By comparing prices, resisting the temptation to upgrade and booking through a company we already trusted, we secured a vehicle that met our needs without blowing the budget.
The biggest thing we learned from this investigation is that value doesn't always come from spending less — it comes from spending smarter.

Final Verdict
Yes. But it didn't happen by chance.
The objective of this investigation was simple. Could a family of four book a 14-night Universal Orlando holiday, during the Easter holidays, for under £4,500? We have investigated flights, accommodation, park tickets and car hire to come to a definitive conclusion.
This wasn't the result of one incredible deal or a lucky discount. It was the result of months — and in some cases years — of planning, patience and making informed decisions.
Collecting the Virgin Atlantic Points over several years, combined with the use of a Companion Voucher, was a real money-saver. If Florida is on your family's wish list, starting to collect Virgin Points several years in advance could make a significant difference. Looking back, we simply wouldn't have achieved our target without them.
It was a bold decision to book our accommodation independently, but it paid off. The key wasn't luck — it was taking the time to properly investigate the booking before committing.
Could we have spent more? Absolutely. Would we book the same holiday this way again? Without hesitation.
We didn't feel like we compromised our holiday. If anything, careful planning gave us more flexibility, more space and the confidence to book another Florida adventure sooner than we ever imagined.

Lessons Learned
Long-term point collection is one of the most powerful tools available to a family planning an expensive holiday. Start early.
Off-site accommodation isn't a compromise — for the right family, it's an upgrade. More space, more freedom, lower cost.
Research before the sale matters as much as the sale itself. Knowing what you're looking for means you can act quickly when the right deal appears.
Investigate any unfamiliar booking before committing. An extra hour of due diligence can save a significant amount of money — and a lot of stress.
